“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance.” (Psalms 42:5)

David had been driven from his beloved city Jerusalem to a foreign land beyond the Jordon river during the rebellion of Absalom. He was separated from the temple where he worshiped God.

The enemies around him believed that the god a people worshiped was confined to the country itself. To them this necessarily meant that when a country is defeated, so is the god which the country worshiped. They held the belief that when you left your country, you left your god unless you took him with you in idol form. David worshiped the true God who was with him no matter where he was and no matter what was happening in his life. When the people around him questioned, “Where is your God?” David knew the answer. He was where David was.

Sometimes circumstances can be so overwhelming that you wonder where God is and why He does not fix the problem or change the circumstances. We must admit that there have been times when we made decisions that set in motion a series of circumstances that were not intended or anticipated. At other times, we may get caught up in the problems or circumstances of others. Sometimes events out of our control occur and presents challenges for us to overcome. It can be difficult, but we must trust that God is willing and able to help us resolve our problems.

When you read Psalm 42 and 43, you will see that David was not questioning whether or not God was real. He was not angry with God, nor did he blame God for his situation. It was the predicament he found himself in that set the stage for him to seek God even more. If you are a child of God, He will never abandon you, nor are you left at the mercy of an impossible situation. God will help you resolve your problem. He is capable of getting you through your situation. Jesus is your hope, so trust Him.

David did. David ended his appeal to God the way he started. “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.” (Psalms 43:5)
